Introducing Melanie, who splits her time between work and study. She’s completing a masters in British Studies, while gaining some on-the-job PR experience at our Berlin office. Best of both worlds? We think so.
What advice would you give to someone who is interested working in b2b tech PR and marketing?
If you’re studying humanities like me, looking for work experience as a student is a good way to explore a field like b2b tech PR and marketing. I barely knew anything about it when I started, but after having been on the job for a few weeks, I was hooked. I think it’s important to be curious and ask questions. And don’t panic if you don’t understand everything straight away – both PR jargon and tech in general can be quite confusing at first, but they are nothing to fear.
What skills are essential for your b2b PR role?
A general interest in technology is good, but I think it’s more important to have a wide range of interests. The lorries’ clients sell solutions from all over the tech space. Hence, you’ll start by learning about media and entertainment, cyber security, fintech and more. And while you probably won’t be enthusiastic about every single one of them, you pick up a lot.
What is your favourite part of working in PR?
I like the variety of working in PR. While I love writing and researching (and sometimes overdo it when I have to write a term paper as part of my studies), I also like analysing social media, taking part in calls, and even reporting. It’s nice to work in different teams, dealing with a range of tasks and topics. I never get bored.
What’s the best part of working at the lorries?
The team! The lorries are a fun bunch of people and I like working with all of them. Not only is every single person extremely nice and patient, but they’ve also taught me a lot in just one year.
What’s something not many people know about you?
While my mum used to be a chef, I have rather limited cooking skills. This is why I bring salads for lunch most of the time.
What was your first/most unusual job?
I spent most of my summers in secondary school at the swimming pool, working as a lifeguard and swimming instructor for children.
Most embarrassing moment?
I’m a bit clumsy at times, so there are quite a few. But probably the time I spilled Aperol all over a guest when I worked in a café as one of my student jobs. The poor guy was wearing a white shirt, which ended up being a shade of orange. I was so embarrassed that I said sorry at least a hundred times and got him a drink on the house.
What three things can’t you live without to do your job?
My notebook, some post-it notes and a highlighter.
